The latest edition of the DHL Logistics Trend Radar highlights 40 key trends that are set to shape the future of logistics, covering both social and technological advancements. These trends are categorized into 17 social and business trends and 23 technological innovations, with each trend assessed for its potential impact and time to adoption. Key clusters such as robotics, the Internet of Things (IoT), and digital infrastructure continue to influence logistics, while emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and sustainability take center stage.

European Association for Forwarding, Transport, Logistics and Customs Services (CLECAT): COMMISSION TAKES ACTION TO ENSURE TIMELY TRANSPOSITION OF ETS2 (06.09.2024)
At the end of July, the European Commission initiated an infringement procedure by sending a letter of formal notice to 26 Member States for failing to fully transpose into national law the provisions of the revised EU Emissions Trading System Directive (EU ETS) related to new emissions trading system for road and buildings (ETS 2).

European Association for Forwarding, Transport, Logistics and Customs Services (CLECAT): DUTCH GOVERNMENT SOFTENS SCHIPHOL SHRINKAGE PLANS (06.09.2024)
The Dutch government is significantly scaling back the original plans to reduce noise pollution around Schiphol Airport. Instead of the proposed 12% reduction in flight movements from 500,000 to 440,000, the government will now aim for a decrease to between 475,000 and 485,000 flights. This represents a reduction of only 3% to 5%.

European Association for Forwarding, Transport, Logistics and Customs Services (CLECAT): FINLAND INCREASES VAT TO 25.5% (06.09.2024)
As of 1 September 2024, Finland has increased its standard Value Added Tax (VAT) rate to 25.5%, positioning the country as having the second-highest VAT rate in the European Union, just behind Hungary's 27%. This change is part of a broader strategy introduced by the Finance Minister to ensure compliance with the Eurozone's fiscal rules, specifically the requirement that government deficits do not exceed 3% of GDP. The VAT hike is expected to contribute to raising €1 billion in additional revenue, alongside other cost-saving measures.

European Association for Forwarding, Transport, Logistics and Customs Services (CLECAT): UK STARTS CONSTRUCTION OF IRISH SEA POST-BREXIT BORDER CONTROL FACILITY (06.09.2024)
Construction has officially begun on a new border control post in Holyhead, North Wales, which will facilitate post-Brexit checks on goods arriving from the Republic of Ireland. Scheduled to become operational in 2025, this facility represents a next step in the UK's post-Brexit strategy, four years after its official departure from the European Union.

European Association for Forwarding, Transport, Logistics and Customs Services (CLECAT): HUNGARY APPROVES E-CMR PROTOCOL (06.09.2024)
On 28 August, Hungary became the third country to adopt the e-CMR protocol this summer, following Italy and Austria. Hungary being the 38th country to join e-CMR, the electronic waybill is now available in almost all of Europe.

European Association for Forwarding, Transport, Logistics and Customs Services (CLECAT): SURVEY ON MP1 AND STATUS OF ROAD HAULAGE MARKET (06.09.2024)
In the framework of the evaluation of the new road freight social rules stemming from the Mobility Package I, DG MOVE commissioned Transport & Mobility Leuven and the University of Antwerp to draw up a study on the implementation of the First Mobility Package and the current status of the European Road Haulage Market, which was last updated in 2015. The consortium has developed a survey to gather stakeholder information on these topics, which would help the European Commission to develop its future road transport policy plans.

On 4 September, the European Parliament’s Transport and Tourism Committee (TRAN) held its first meeting after the summer recess. During this session, MEPs engaged in an exchange of views with Ms Maja Markovčić Kostelac, Executive Director of the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA), and Mr Josef Doppelbauer, Executive Director of the European Union Agency for Railways (ERA).
