The European Union is moving closer to imposing duties on electric vehicles (EVs) imported from China, following a key vote by the Trade Defence Instruments Committee. Despite a late effort by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to block the measure, ten Member States voted in favour of the duties, five opposed, and 12 abstained. On 3 October, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) released its August data on global air freight markets, highlighting a strong growth in demand. Compared to August 2023, total demand, measured in cargo tonne-kilometres (CTKs), increased by 11.4% (12.4% for international operations). This marks the nineth consecutive months of double-digit year-on-year growth, with overall levels reaching heights not seen since the record peaks of 2021. Capacity, measured in available cargo tonne-kilometres (ACTKs), increased by 6.2% compared to August 2023 (8.2% for international operations). This increase was primarily due to a 10.9% increase in international belly capacity, with industry-wide capacity reaching an all-time high.
