On 6 August, the e-CMR protocol entered into force in Austria, becoming the 36th country to join to protocol, paving the way for digital, paperless road freight transport within the country. With Austria's accession, any road transport involving the country can now be fully digitised, allowing for seamless and efficient operations and administration. This significant step enables shippers, transport companies and freight forwarders to immediately use the e-CMR for their shipments.

European Association for Forwarding, Transport, Logistics and Customs Services (CLECAT): SHIPPING RATES TO REMAIN HIGH DESPITE HINTS OF END TO PEAK SEASON (23.08.2024)
According to industry experts shipping market remains in a state of flux as a result of geopolitical tensions. Key indicators have shown that rates are starting to fall, suggesting the end to a peak season, but rates still remain higher than they were in 2023. The Shanghai Containerised Freight Index, which tracks the spot market on one of trade’s most important routes, was over $3500 for a twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) in June 2024, compared to just over $950/TEU at the same point last year. The Drewery World Container Index decreased 2% to $5,428 per 40ft container, with spot rates along most major routes falling or holding steady. Even with the fall, Drewery’s index is still 282% more than the average 2019, pre-pandemic rate of $1,420. And though some carriers will reportedly introduce rate increases in mid-August, easing demand and increased capacity for this lane have many doubtful that rate increases will stick.

European Association for Forwarding, Transport, Logistics and Customs Services (CLECAT): AIR CARGO DEMAND CONTINUOUS TO GROW IN JUNE (23.08.2024)
On 30 July, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) released its latest data on global air freight markets, highlighting a robust growth in demand. Compared to June 2023, total demand, measured in cargo tonne-kilometres (CTKs), increased by 14.1% (15.6% for international operations). This marks the seventh consecutive month of double-digit year-on-year growth. Capacity, measured in available cargo tonne-kilometres (ACTKs), increased by 8.8% compared to June 2023 (10.8% for international operations). This increase led to an exceptional first half-year performance for air cargo, with volumes exceeding 2023, 2022, and even the record-breaking 2021 levels.
