Preventing runway excursions was the top theme at this year’s Safety Forum, which saw 300+ aviation operation professionals join the most important operational aviation safety event of the year, held online and co-organised by the Flight Safety Foundation, the European Regions Airline Association and EUROCONTROL. Runway excursions, when aircraft unintentionally veer off or overrun the runway on arrival or departure, remain one of the most serious risks in aviation, comprising 23% of all accidents pre-COVID – a problem explicitly tackled in the recently released Global Action Plan for the Prevention of Runway Excursion, or GAPPRE for short.
