The fundamental nature of what Africa trades is undergoing a sophisticated evolution. For decades, Energy and Mining dominated the landscape, accounting for 58% of maritime export value in 2015. However, by 2024, this share dropped to 51%, while Metals and Metal Products rose to 14%. This data signals a deliberate shift as countries like the Democratic Republic of the Congo are implementing local content policies and export restrictions to ensure mineral resources are processed regionally rather than shipping raw materials.
