After a steady and significant reduction from 2020 to 2023, average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from new cars registered in Europe slightly increased in 2024, according to new provisional data published today by the European Environment Agency (EEA).
Average CO2 emissions from new vans increased more significantly in 2024. The average emissions from both new cars and new vans were below the 2024 fleet-wide targets, but still significantly above the new targets that apply from 2025. An increase in emissions in the last calendar year before stricter targets start applying was also observed in 2019.
The data published today are based on information provided by European countries, including details on all newly registered cars and vans.
The provisional data show that 10.7 million new cars were registered in the EU, Norway and Iceland in 2024, which is the same as in 2023. Approximately 22% of these new car registrations were electric — either fully or plug-in hybrid. The share of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) declined by about 1 percentage point compared to 2023.
