The Baltic Ports Organization (BPO) board met yesterday, during an online meeting. Topics discussed included last year’s results achieved by the Baltic ports and the possible outlook for 2021. Also on the agenda was the impact of the European Green Deal (EGD) on the port market in Europe and the Baltic Sea region (BSR). According to the Port Monitor report, prepared by Actia Forum, the ten biggest Baltic ports handled a total of nearly 450m tonnes in 2020. This translates to a drop of 5.6% in comparison to 2019. On the container side of things, the top 10 Baltic container ports registered a total throughput of 8.8m TEUs. Similarly as was the case with total cargo handling, this meant a drop of 4.7% in comparison to the last year. It won’t surprise anyone, that passenger traffic, including cruise traffic, suffered most due to the ongoing development of the COVID-19 pandemic.
