Pressemitteilung: Battery electric cars reach a 22% market share in Europe in May (2026)

Berlin, 25 June — New battery electric car registrations in Europe (including the EU, Norway, and Iceland) reached a 22% market share in May, bringing the year-to-date share to 21% in January–May 2026. This share represents a 5-percentage-point (p.p.) increase compared with the same period in 2025.
Among the five largest markets, battery electric car registrations in May increased significantly in France (+93%), Italy (+85%), Germany (+39%), and Spain (+34) but decreased in Poland (−26%). From January to May 2026, total battery electric car registrations in Europe were nearly 1 million units.
Several countries are also seeing a rise in new battery electric car registrations from corporate fleets. Corporate fleets are a key driver for the electrification of the used car market due to their faster vehicle turnover. From January to May, battery electric car registrations from companies increased notably in Denmark (51%, +13 p.p.), Sweden (40%, +5 p.p.), Finland (35%, +12 p.p.), and France (25%, +8 p.p.).
“Europe’s battery electric car market continued its upward trend across countries in May. A 5-percentage-point increase from January to May compared with the same period in 2025 is remarkable. At the same time, market segments that have been slower to electrify, such as corporate fleets, are catching up quickly in 2026. Large companies in France have already reached a 44% market share, virtually meeting the 2030 target proposed by the European Commission, which remains under discussion,” says Peter Mock, ICCT Europe Director.
