Every online purchase, emergency response, government service and postal delivery begins with one essential piece of information: an address. Today, however, postal addressing is evolving beyond its traditional postal function, becoming part of the digital infrastructure that connects people, places and services across modern economies.
Around the world, countries are progressively introducing digital postcodes and digital addressing systems, improving delivery accuracy and the efficiency of postal operations while supporting e-commerce, logistics, emergency response and public administration. As these systems evolve, ensuring that they can work together across borders is becoming increasingly important.
For the Universal Postal Union (UPU), this evolution represents an opportunity to strengthen postal addressing as part of the wider digital ecosystem. Through its Addressing Group, the UPU is exploring internationally harmonized approaches that support interoperability between national addressing systems while preserving national ownership. The objective is not to replace national solutions, but to enable greater compatibility between them, facilitating cross-border postal operations, e-commerce and digital services. This also means ensuring that new digital addressing elements can be validated and exchanged in standardized, machine-readable formats. (....)
