Today, the European Commission has adopted a crucial measure to enhance maritime safety and environmental protection within EU waters. Amending the Vessel Monitoring Directive (2002/59/EC), the new proposal will require all ships entering areas of mandatory ship reporting systems (MRS), even those simply transiting the EU coastlines without entering an EU port, to provide proof of adequate insurance. By ensuring that all vessels operating in our vicinity are properly insured, the EU’s ability to monitor and, if necessary, investigate potentially unsafe vessels is strengthened. This is a significant step towards safer and more secure maritime transport, particularly addressing the risks posed by the so-called 'shadow fleet.' It also reinforces our commitment to a more environmentally responsible maritime sector. The next step is the adoption of the proposal by the Council and the European Parliament. (....)
