Pressemitteilung: Questions and answers on the EU's Global Agreement with Mexico

Why did the EU update its agreement with Mexico? In 1997, the EU and Mexico signed an Economic Partnership, Political Coordination and Cooperation Agreement. It included a part on trade, which mostly opened up trade in goods. This trade agreement came into force in 2000. The part of the agreement covering trade in services came into force in 2001. More than two decades on, it is time to update this agreement, incorporating up to date provisions spanning from intellectual property rights to trade and sustainable development. This agreement will create valuable new commercial opportunities for EU exporters and investors, while strengthening ties with a trusted strategic partner. At a time when protectionist pressures are growing, the agreement sends a clear signal that both our economies are open for trade and business on the basis of fair rules and high standards. (....)
