After a volatile 2025 marked by geopolitical tension, policy shifts and uneven demand, industry outlooks indicate that 2026 is set to be shaped by consolidation rather than expansion, technology acceleration and rising regulatory pressure. Rather than a single disruptive force, a set of interconnected trends is redefining how networks are designed, operated and governed across regions.
Carrier & capacity realignment continues to reshape global transport markets. Ocean freight is undergoing its most significant consolidation in years, with a small number of alliances now controlling the vast majority of global container capacity. As shipping lines seek to restore pricing power and optimise fleets, service options are becoming more standardised, reducing flexibility for shippers even as nominal capacity increases. Similar dynamics are emerging more gradually in airfreight, where capacity remains available but increasingly lane-specific, particularly across Trans-Pacific and trans-Atlantic routes affected by tariff uncertainty and regulation change.
In parallel, supply chains across Asia Pacific are becoming denser and more regional. Rapid e-commerce growth is driving demand for high-frequency logistics networks that extend beyond coastal gateways into tier-2 and tier-3 cities. In China, this shift is reinforced by significant investment into inland logistics hubs such as Chongqing, Xi’an and Chengdu, supported by automation, AI-driven warehouse systems and digital trade documentation. At the same time, infrastructure gaps and regulatory fragmentation continue to create friction, from port congestion to divergent customs regimes.
