Pressemitteilung: Thessaloniki metro Kalamaria extension enters service with Hitachi Rail's driverless signalling technology
The Kalamaria extension of the Thessaloniki metro officially entered service yesterday, marking the next phase in the expansion of Greece's first fully automated, driverless metro network and providing improved connectivity for residents and visitors across the greater Thessaloniki area. The 4.8 km underground extension branches from the existing metro line at 25 Martiou and adds five new stations: Nomarchia, Kalamaria, Aretsou, Nea Krini and Mikra. The new section extends the reach of the Thessaloniki Metro, enhancing sustainable urban mobility and supporting the city's long-term transportation needs. Hitachi Rail supplied its advanced Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling technology for the extension project. The digital signalling system enables Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4) operations, supporting fully automated, driverless service while delivering high levels of reliability, safety and operational efficiency.
