Pressemitteilung: UN adopts global standard to measure and limit brake particle emissions

While exhaust emissions from vehicles have significantly decreased over the past decades, non-exhaust emissions – especially from brake and tyre wear – are becoming an increasingly important source of particulate pollution in urban environments.
To respond to this challenge the UNECE World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations (WP.29) has adopted a new regulation that establishes the world’s first internationally harmonized laboratory procedure for measuring and limiting brake particle emissions from light-duty vehicles.
The new UN Regulation introduces standardized test methods and emission limits for brake-generated particulate matter (PM). It follows the adoption of the UN Global Technical Regulation No. 24 to measure emissions from braking systems of cars and vans. “This regulation represents a decisive milestone in global vehicle emission policy,” said Per Ohlund, Chair of the UNECE Working Party on Pollution and Energy (GRPE). “As vehicles become cleaner at the tailpipe, we must also tackle non-exhaust emissions to continue improving air quality.” (....)
