Robotaxis (ridehailing services using highly automated - SAE Level 4 or higher systems - vehicles) are no longer a distant vision but are already becoming part of European traffic.
With a recent commercial launch in Zagreb, they are expected to be launched in Zurich, Madrid, London and several other European cities later this year.
The European Road Transport Research Advisory Council (ERTRAC)’s Connected, Cooperative and Automated Mobility (CCAM) 2050 Roadmap sets out a long term European vision for CCAM highlighting the importance of social inclusion and equity, stating that: “Users and usage are in the centre of a development where technology needs are derived from societal targets. CCAM plays an important role in meeting the EU ‘Smart and sustainable mobility strategy’ …European industry [shall] provide competitive, attractive, safe and affordable services and vehicles that ensure mobility and access of goods for all persons.”
A 2026 study on ‘Expected Impact of the Deployment of Automated Vehicles in the EU’ by the Panel for the Future of Science and Technology (STOA), European Parliament envisions three distinct opportunities for Automated Vehicle (AV) deployment in the EU: ‘European Leadership,’ ‘Selective Strengths and Dependencies,’ and ‘External Dependence’.
