The Safety Management System (SMS) is a cornerstone of the European regulatory framework for railway safety. This new beginner-level module offers a structured learning journey designed to build a solid understanding of SMS principles and their application in the railway sector. The module is organised into three units: • Unit 1 introduces the origins of SMS concepts, including their historical context, definition and scope. • Unit 2 presents the regulatory standards, the foundational elements of an SMS, and the holistic approach to safety management. • Unit 3 focuses on the specific structure of a railway SMS, SMS documentation, and sustainable safety management practices.
