IRU welcomes today’s AccelerateEU package as an important first response to the energy crisis affecting operators across the EU, particularly its explicit recognition of diesel supply and road transport as part of the response architecture.
While questions of targeted financial support are expected to be addressed separately through the forthcoming Commission State aid framework, today’s package contains several important elements on the immediate operational response to the crisis.

International Road Union (IRU): Continuing North American trucking uncertainty on the table (22 Apr 2026)
The trucking industry in North America is grappling with several major challenges, including additional tariffs, stricter rules-of-origin requirements, and rising fuel prices. IRU recently brought together Mexican vehicle makers and US carriers to discuss what keeps them up at night.
• Vehicle production costs and prices could rise soon 
• Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) availability is emerging as a key concern 
• Mexico plans to restrict imports of older used US commercial vehicles
• The upcoming review of the region’s trade agreement is adding to the uncertainty
IRU’s North American Transportation Forum (NATF) and member the American Trucking Associations (ATA) recently hosted ANPACT, Mexico’s truck and bus manufacturers association, in Washington DC.
ANPACT President Rogelio Arzate led the delegation, which included executives from Daimler and Paccar. They were welcomed by ATA Senior Vice President and IRU CTM Vice President Bob Costello, along with IRU’s Martin Rojas, who led the discussions.
Talks focused on the outlook for North American trade, geopolitics and energy, with participants highlighting growing uncertainty across the region.

International Road Union (IRU): Secure, efficient, resilient: One year of TIR in Iraq (22 Apr 2026 · Prosperity)
Close to 2,000 road transport operations were conducted via Iraq under the global TIR system over the past year.
TIR went live in Iraq in April 2025 – and operators were quick to take advantage of this new transit route in the Middle East.
Managed by IRU under a United Nations mandate, TIR provides unmatched transit security and efficiency. With goods sealed at the point of departure and only opened at their destination, TIR enables the shipment of goods from one country to another, transiting as many countries as needed along the way, via a secure, multimodal and mutually recognised system.
TIR’s electronic pre-declaration system, TIR-EPD, has also been implemented in Iraq to support the submission of advance cargo information and full compliance with national advance risk management requirements.
In its first year, operators benefited from over six new efficient and secure routes through Iraq, including from: 
• Hungary to Jordan in just six days, rather than the five weeks required for traditional non-TIR routes 
• Poland to the UAE entirely by road in just ten days, more than halving the traditional 24-day journey 
• Türkiye to Jordan in just five days, as opposed to four to five weeks by sea 
• Türkiye to Kuwait in just four days, instead of the 45-day maritime route
“The TIR system immediately opened doors to efficient and secure trade via Iraq,” said IRU Secretary General Umberto de Pretto. “Iraq’s ambitious Development Road Project needs such a harmonised border and customs system.”
