Die Eskalation findet in unmittelbarer Nähe bedeutender internationaler Seehandelswege und Umschlagplätze statt, insbesondere im Umfeld der Straße von Hormus, und erhöht damit das Risiko möglicher Angriffe oder sicherheitsrelevanter Zwischenfälle auf See.

Nach Berichten über Angriffe auf die zivile Schifffahrt im Bereich der Straße von Hormus und angrenzenden Seegebieten vor der Küste Omans, darunter auch ein Öltanker, beobachtet der Verband Deutscher Reeder (VDR) die Lage weiterhin mit größter Aufmerksamkeit. Nach vorliegenden Informationen gibt es dabei erste Verletzte und auch Todesopfer. Deutsche Schiffe und Seeleute sind nach aktueller Kenntnislage bislang nicht von Angriffen betroffen. Die Vorfälle zeigen jedoch, dass sich die Bedrohungslage für die zivile Handelsschifffahrt weiter konkretisiert hat.
Die Entwicklungen unterstreichen die zunehmende Gefährdung entlang einer der wichtigsten globalen Energie- und Handelsrouten und sind aus Sicht der Handelsschifffahrt äußerst besorgniserregend. Die Situation entwickelt sich hochdynamisch und bleibt sehr volatil.
Nach unserem derzeitigen Kenntnisstand befinden sich aktuell mindestens rund 25 Schiffe von sieben deutschen Reedereien in den Gewässern des Golfs. Darunter sind zwei Kreuzfahrtschiffe mit zusammen etwa 7.000 Passagieren an Bord, die die Region durch die Straße von Hormus aus Sicherheitsgründen derzeit nicht verlassen können. Darüber hinaus sind von der Lage im Nahen Osten noch weitaus mehr Schiffe deutscher Reedereien betroffen, die in der Großregion präsent sind, etwa im Arabischen Meer und im Roten Meer.

Hinzu kommt die energiepolitische Dimension: Etwa ein Fünftel der weltweiten Energieimporte passiert täglich die Straße von Hormus. Deutschland ist auf Öl- und LNG‑Lieferungen angewiesen. The coordinated attacks on Iranian military, nuclear, and leadership sites, including the reported killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, represent a profound shock to Iran’s political system and a fundamental rupture in what had still looked, only a few days ago, like an ongoing diplomatic process. A third round of nuclear talks in Geneva had just concluded with the Omani mediator reporting “significant progress”. Washington apparently disagreed.
The stated US objective has evolved well beyond nuclear containment. US President Donald Trump’s direct address to the Iranian people, “take over your government, it will be yours to take”, alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s framing of “removing an existential threat,” makes regime change the explicit goal. That is a significant, legally contested, and historically dangerous step. Middle Eastern history offers little encouragement for the proposition that civilian populations seize orderly control once leadership structures collapse. Power vacuums tend to produce civil war, hardline consolidation, or prolonged fragmentation; sometimes all three.

These crews are simply doing their jobs and must be protected from the effects of wider geopolitical tensions.
Freedom of navigation is a fundamental principle of international maritime law, and it must be respected by all Parties, with no exception.
I am monitoring the situation closely, and I urge all shipping companies to exercise maximum caution. Where possible, vessels should avoid transiting the affected region until conditions improve.

We are currently receiving many questions regarding the situation in the Middle East and its impact on KLM, our passengers, and our crew. The safety of our passengers and employees is always KLM’s highest priority.

- Until March 5, KLM will not operate any flights to or from Dubai, Riyadh, and Dammam.
- KLM does not operate flights to other destinations in the Middle East.
- Passengers whose flights have been canceled have been informed. As soon as possible, they will be rebooked. We are closely monitoring the situation.
- We cannot provide an exact number of KLM passengers currently unable to return from Dubai, Dammam, and Riyadh. The number of cancellations does not tell the full story: some travelers never departed, others only used these destinations to transfer and have since found alternative routes, while for others, these cities are their final destinations because they live there. For this reason, the number of cancellations does not accurately reflect the number of KLM passengers still in the region.

Airlines are still cancelling and rerouting flights across the Middle East after the United States and Israel carried out military strikes on Iran.
Airports in Tel Aviv, Dubai, Doha, and other major regional hubs have halted departures and arrivals.
The UK Foreign Office has advised British nationals not to travel to Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates unless absolutely necessary. Those already in these countries are being told to stay indoors and take precautions.

Luftfahrt-Bundesamt (LBA): Hinweise zu Flugausfällen aufgrund der aktuellen Situation im Nahen Osten (02.03.2026)
Das Luftfahrt-Bundesamtes (LBA) informiert zu den weitreichenden Störungen im Luftverkehr auch über die Region im Nahen Osten hinaus.
Bei Flugausfällen und Verspätungen aufgrund der aktuellen Sicherheitslage im Nahen Osten greifen die Fluggastrechte gemäß der Verordnung (EG) Nr. 261/2004, wenn: 
- der Flug innerhalb der Europäischen Union (EU) angetreten wird oder
- der Flug von einem Drittstaat in die EU durchgeführt wird und die Fluggesellschaft aus der EU stammt.
Die Verordnung gilt nicht für Flüge, die von einem Drittstaat in die EU von einer nicht aus der EU stammenden Fluggesellschaft durchgeführt werden.
Bei Anwendbarkeit der Verordnung haben betroffene Reisende gegenüber der den gebuchten Flug ausführenden Fluggesellschaft Anspruch auf Betreuungsleistungen in Form von Verpflegung in angemessenem Verhältnis zur Wartezeit und - falls erforderlich - auf Unterkunft und Transfer zwischen Flughafen und der Unterkunft. 
Bei Annullierung ihres Fluges können betroffene Fluggäste außerdem wählen zwischen anderweitiger Beförderung zu dem auf ihrem Ticket ausgewiesenen Endziel und der Erstattung der Ticketkosten. Die Ersatzbeförderung kann dabei zum frühestmöglichen Zeitpunkt oder zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt nach Wunsch der Fluggäste erfolgen.
