Xeneta AS: XENETA WEEKLY OCEAN CONTAINER SHIPPING MARKET UPDATE - 6.8.2026 (August 06, 2026)
Spot rates split sharply this week: up 14% into the US West Coast while Asia to Europe falls 5%. Peter Sand on Hormuz transits and last-minute blanked sailings.
Xeneta analyst insight
Peter Sand, Xeneta Chief Analyst:
“As the ‘dance macabre’ for all stakeholders within the maritime supply chains continues around the Strait of Hormuz; uncertainty leaves maritime safety and the future of strait transits in shackles. Since mid-July, the total number of daily transits has been in the teens, about one tenth of pre-war transits – with containerships transits between zero and two.
“While we are waiting for the world to change, the disruptions keep taking their tolls. Xeneta’s early indication for average container shipping freight rates developments in early August was spot on. Freight rates for Asian exports heading towards Europe are down by almost 5% when comparing today’s market average with that of one week ago.

Xeneta AS: Charters Signals a Weaker Air Cargo Market Over Rest of 2026 (August 06, 2026)
The rate premiums air freight buyers have paid since the escalation of the Middle East conflict in late February are continuing to unwind, with little evidence of a peak season boost for airlines and forwarders to look forward to, as the global air cargo market faces a slower second half of 2026, according to new industry data and analysis from Xeneta.
OSLO, Norway, 6 August 2026
Data for July 2026 was in line with Xeneta's earlier market statements. Global air cargo spot rates (valid for up to one month) stood +28% higher year-on-year last month at an average of USD 3.12 per kg, but the pace of growth eased for a second consecutive month. It compared to +38% in June and the +41% peak in May. Spot rates fell -6% month-on-month.
“It’s July, so the market is traditionally softer than June, and, year-on-year, we saw rates coming down as expected. Our more positive outlook for 2026 (compared to our projections in November 2025) in our latest mid-year review is based on the strong growth at the start to the year, but we expect a weaker second half. Very few people are talking about peak season,” said Xeneta’s Chief Airfreight Officer, Niall van de Wouw.

Xeneta AS: Xeneta Schedule Reliability Scorecard - July 2026 (August 06, 2026)
Global schedule reliability fell to 33% in July, down 4pp from June, as average delay rose to 4.2 days. See which carriers and ports are driving the decline.
Global reliability deteriorates sharply ahead of peak season demand
Global reliability declined for the second month running in July, bearing the weight of persistent pressures down on schedules that saw genuine improvement in trades like Far East to North America in Q2. A drop of -4pp to 33%, on the heels of -2pp in June, has erased half of the hard-won recovery that lifted reliability from February's pit (28%) to the May's peak (39%) in the first half of the year.
Average delays jumped acutely from +3.5 days late to +4.2 from June through July. We are not only seeing more vessels arriving late, but the severity of that lateness is gaining momentum.
